Adele Bowden
Hi!
I’m a English teacher and mother of 2 little boys living in the Plymouth area. I love reading (cliche!) and have recently set up a book group. Since returning to South West, I’ve really enjoyed getting out into the fresh air after the heat of the deserts(!) for a walk or even a splash- although I've not quite mastered surfing yet! During the UK Winter (my 1st in over a decade!), I have recently taken up cross-stitch + dipped my fingers into learning crochet. Any avid 'stitchers' want to start an interactive stitching club? I've found it great for encouraging 'calmness' into my busy life!
Teaching Experience
I've been an English teacher for 16 years, teaching KS3-KS5 English Literature + Language. I have taught across different exam boards- Cambridge (where I became an examiner), AQA and most recently Edexcel (IGCSE).
My teaching career started in Cornwall + Plymouth in state schools before moving abroad to teach in South East Asia and the Middle East in academically selected Private schools.
My lessons consist of discussion, individual working, research and most importantly, enjoyment of the subject! In all the schools I've worked at I focus foremost on enjoyment and then the academia. I also try to find a learning style that suits the students. A mantra I repeat is 'I am here for you- the students- what do you need from me to help you become successful, confident learners?'
During my teaching career, I joined the pastoral team. Firstly, becoming Head of House, which was a thoroughly fun job to do-especially winning the House competitions and then Head of Sixth Form. Whilst Head of Sixth Form, I ran several 'life skills workshops' (amongst monitoring and encouraging study!) which were particularly useful for the students who were choosing to studying abroad and for the students who had never been to the UK/left home before eg Malaysia to UK. During my time with the Sixth Form, I worked closely with the University Advisor helping, supporting and advising students on their University Applications.
I have now left the classroom and am now offering 1:1 tutoring sessions.
