Dr Jenna Hussain
I am a qualified GP, educator, and mentor with a strong passion for supporting students through medical school preparation and the wider university application process. Having completed my GP training, I bring a broad range of clinical experience across general practice, oncology, palliative care, and hospital medicine. This enables me to offer realistic, up-to-date insight into both medical training and the realities of a career in healthcare. My expertise in medical school preparation is grounded in both personal experience and academic contribution. I am a co-author of “The Unofficial Guide to the Medical School Interview”, and have previously contributed to resources focused on gaining entry to medical school. Through this, I have developed a detailed understanding of the application process, including personal statements, entrance exams, and interview techniques. Alongside this, I have hands-on experience tutoring GCSE and A-level students and supporting university applicants, helping them successfully secure offers. I have a longstanding commitment to widening participation and mentorship. I have volunteered in outreach programmes working with schools and colleges to support students from diverse backgrounds in accessing medical careers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I co-developed national educational initiatives to support early-graduating medical students, demonstrating my ability to lead, innovate, and deliver impactful teaching. I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Practice, Leadership, Management and Medical Education (Distinction), and I am a Fellow of both the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Healthcare Leadership Academy. I have also led accredited leadership programmes for healthcare trainees and continue to contribute to medical education through conference leadership, NHS e-learning development, and invited teaching roles. My approach to mentorship is holistic. I focus not only on academic success, but also on building confidence, resilience, and clarity of direction. Having navigated a highly competitive academic pathway myself and received national recognition, including RCGP Junior Doctor of the Year, I understand what it takes to stand out. I am passionate about helping students achieve their goals and feel confident in their journey. I am well equipped to guide aspiring medical students and university applicants, supporting them to succeed and truly distinguish themselves.
Teaching Experience
I have developed extensive teaching and mentorship experience across a range of settings, from one-to-one academic support to national medical education initiatives. My teaching practice is grounded in both formal training and practical delivery, allowing me to adapt my approach to suit different learning styles, levels, and goals. I began teaching early in my career as a private tutor, supporting GCSE and A-level students in core topics, alongside providing structured guidance for university applications. This included helping students craft competitive personal statements, prepare for entrance exams, and develop the confidence and communication skills required for interviews. Many of the students I supported went on to successfully secure offers for their chosen courses. Alongside this, I have been actively involved in widening participation and outreach work, delivering sessions in schools and colleges to support students from diverse backgrounds in accessing medical careers. These sessions focused not only on the application process, but also on building aspiration, demystifying medicine, and providing practical strategies for success. My teaching experience expanded significantly through my work with Medics Academy and the Healthcare Leadership Academy. As IL1 Course Lead, I led and delivered a nationally recognised, university-accredited leadership programme for postgraduate trainees. This involved designing and facilitating teaching sessions, coordinating faculty, and mentoring participants through a structured curriculum focused on leadership, management, and professional development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I co-developed and delivered a national support and education platform for final-year medical students graduating early. This required rapidly creating accessible, high-quality educational content, as well as communicating evolving national guidance clearly and effectively. This experience strengthened my ability to teach at scale and adapt to fast-changing educational needs. I have also contributed to digital and asynchronous learning through co-authoring an NHS e-learning module in oncology and palliative care, designed for a wide range of healthcare professionals. In addition, I have delivered invited teaching sessions and educational talks for clinicians, including dermatology-focused teaching within both primary care and oncology contexts. My academic contributions further support my teaching expertise. As a co-author of “The Unofficial Guide to the Medical School Interview”, I have helped develop structured, evidence-based guidance for aspiring medical students. I have also created practical learning resources, including clinical prompt cards for students entering clinical placements, designed to support safe and effective learning in real-world environments. Overall, my teaching experience spans individual mentorship, small-group facilitation, large-scale programme delivery, and national educational resource development. I am confident teaching across a range of levels, from school students to postgraduate trainees, and I am particularly passionate about supporting students through key transition points such as applying to university and preparing for medical school.
