11+ Preparation Without Panic

What's actually proportionate, when to start, how much prep a bright child really needs — and how to keep the whole thing low-stress. No arms race, no guarantees, no hype.

First, the thing nobody says out loud

In most families, the parent is more stressed about the 11+ than the child is.

That's worth knowing, because almost everything that makes the 11+ miserable comes from the adult anxiety around it — the local hype, the sense that everyone else is doing more, the fear of getting it wrong — rather than from the work itself. Get the panic out of the way and what's left is very manageable.

You are in the driving seat. You set the pace, you can pull back or change tack, and no tutor's timetable is gospel. Hold onto that.

How much prep does a bright child actually need?

Less than the noise suggests.

For a reasonably able child, short and frequent beats hours a day. A sensible rhythm is a couple of short practice sessions a week, a few timed papers, and a mock or two in the run-up to find the weak spots — not a daily grind. The job of preparation is really three things:

  1. Familiarity — so the question styles and the format aren't a surprise on the day.
  2. Filling gaps — covering the bits (often maths) a child won't have met at school by exam time.
  3. Technique and timing — working calmly under the clock.

That's it. A child who is genuinely suited to a selective school does not need years of coaching to get there.

Where healthy prep ends and "over-tutoring" begins

A useful line, drawn from parents who've been through it:

  • Healthy prep = familiarisation + filling the content gap + exam technique, fitted around a normal childhood.
  • Over-tutoring = years of formal tuition from infancy, intensive summer schools, cancelled holidays and hobbies, all-out cramming.

The warning that comes up again and again: children who are pushed over the line into a school that isn't right for them often struggle once they're in. Preparation should ready your child for the school, not just drill them past the test.

Don't make them give up the things they love

A relaxed, well-rounded child often performs better, not worse. Keep the football, the music, the weekends. Prep that costs a child their childhood is a bad trade even when it works.

Do you even need a tutor?

Not necessarily. Good preparation is what matters, and plenty of capable parents do it themselves with practice papers, a bit of gap-filling and a couple of mocks.

A tutor tends to help most when:

  • you'd like a neutral adult your child will actually listen to (many children resist a parent-as-teacher);
  • you want a fixed weekly slot that protects the time;
  • you'd value patience and experience, or help with the parts you're less confident teaching (non-verbal reasoning is the classic one);
  • you simply don't have the time, and want the reassurance of someone steering.

If none of that applies, home prep alone is a perfectly respectable route. And if cost is the worry, small-group classes are a gentler, more affordable middle option than 1:1.

One caveat the other way: a tutor can't manufacture ability. If a child is a long way off the standard a selective exam demands, intense tutoring tends to cause more distress than it solves.

When should we start?

Later than the rumour mill implies, for most children. A year of steady, low-intensity preparation is plenty for a child working at roughly the right level — beginning in Year 5 gives lots of room to build the four components a little and often, with no last-minute cramming. (Exact timing varies by area and by your child, so treat any "you must start by X" rule with suspicion.)

If you're coming to it later — even in the run-up to a Year 6 exam — you can still make a real difference by focusing on gaps, technique and confidence rather than trying to do everything.

The bigger question: is a grammar school right for your child?

This is the one most 11+ advice skips, and it matters more than any prep tip.

Passing isn't the only good outcome. A selective school is a brilliant fit for some children and the wrong fit for others. A child who thrives as a confident high-achiever in a less selective setting can feel like a failure in the bottom half of a super-selective one — and a happy child where they are beats a stressed one who just scraped in.

So look closely at the next several years and at the specific school — its atmosphere, its support, whether it suits how your child learns — not just at getting through the gate. Spiky children (brilliant at maths, average at writing, say) are often ill-served by a single cut-off and may do better somewhere that stretches them subject by subject.

Whatever you decide, not pursuing or not passing the 11+ is not failing your child. The thing worth protecting through all of this is their confidence.

A few things parents wish they'd known

  • The odds usually look worse than they are — in many areas children can apply to several schools but accept only one, so schools over-offer.
  • People aren't always straight about how much they're prepping or what offers they've had. Don't calibrate against playground noise.
  • It's one day. Even a clearly able child can have an off morning — nothing is a dead cert, so keep a genuine, un-catastrophised Plan B and never frame it as pass-or-else in front of your child.
  • Reward effort, not outcome. It keeps the process kind and takes the pressure off the result.
  • Mind the logistics — test days can fall across several schools and sometimes at short notice, so a little annual leave in reserve helps.

If it's all feeling too heavy

If preparation is making your child genuinely anxious, that's a signal to ease off, not push harder — the prep is rarely the problem; the "pass-or-else" framing is. Step back, keep it light, and if you're worried about your child's wellbeing, talk to your GP or your child's school. No school place is worth your child's mental health.
